Description

138 years ago, 38 Dakota men were mass hanged at Mankato, MN. One by the name of White Dog had a sister/cousin named Hunka Sivaka, aka, Anna Williams. She had to flee with her two children to Devils Lake, ND because the relatives of the 38 hanged were being pursued and killed. Anna Williams had a son named Frank Ste, Frank Ste had a daughter named Annie Jane, Annie Jane had a daughter named Alvina. Alvina had a son named LEONARD PELTIER. Leonard comes from the blood-line of White Dog of the 38 hanged at Mankato. The 38 bodies were buried in a mass grave and the same night were dug up by Dr. William Mayo. The flesh was boiled off the bones and used for medical research. Ironically, Leonard was taken to Rochester Mayo Clinic (the foundation of this clinic is built from the bones of White Dog and the 37 hanged) for jaw surgery then returned to prison at Fort Leavenworth, KS. The Leonard Peltier Trial seems to be a continuation of "The Dakota Conflict Trials of 1862".

Brilliant. Thanks for the info. I didn't know about Leonard Peltiers ancestry. I am afraid most people don't know about ... well Leonard Peltier. How long has he been in jail now? 30 years?

Thank you for this post. The Trial of Leonard is a modern day version of The Indian Removal Programs. I travel to Wounded Knee and Pine Ridge several times a year and I am always impressed with the people that I meet there. The friendships that I have made with Elders there are important to me. It hurts my heart to know that Indians are still living in a war zone. Perhaps there will be a day when there is no discrimination towards Indians and the government will return the Trust Fund monies. My grandmother was taken 'off rez' and 'Christianized'....that didn't work, she will always be Indian as will I. Thanks again for such a beautiful work.
