Description

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This photo was taken today in the October sunshine ~ it is of Grey's Monument, which stands at the top of Grey Street and Grainger Street, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It was completed in 1838, to celebrate the 1832 Reform of Parliament. The 134 foot column is topped by a 13 foot statue of Earl Grey (1764 - 1845), who was Prime Minister from 1830 - 1834, and whose favourite tea blend was named after him, and became world famous. In 1941, the statue's head was knocked off by a bolt of lightning, and fell to the ground and was smashed to pieces. Six years later a new head was created! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for looking, and for any comments, which I really appreciate. Gordon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An imposing capture on a bright day! Well done! Here's the extra info you didn't want to overload your intro with! The Earl was sculpted by Edward Hodges Baily, R.A., afterwards chosen to create the even more famous statue of Nelson, in Trafalgar Square, London in 1839! Baily also worked at Buckingham Palace and many other notable and famous places.
Splendid photo -subject matter and text --flawless picture in every way...not to minimize it's fine art quality --but this should be the official postcard from the area ...Extraordinary work !!!
I dont know Newcastle at all. Just love this image. I love the detail in the background and the way in which that detail manages to draw the eye, even over the monument itself. Great.
