Description

The Padaung women of Kayah state, Burma, originally wore neck rings to make themselves unattractive to slave traders. Contrary to belief, the neck does not get extended but the shoulders sag under the cumulative weight of 10 kgs or more. This elderly woman was, at first, skeptical about my photographing her until she decided that I did not look like a slave trader!! That was just a joke. Slave trade does not exist in Burma. However, the custom of wearing neck rings continues among Padaung women. This lady works as a cloth weaver in a factory near Inle lake.

This is cool mate...... it only goes to show that Slave Tranding was a big thing in the past and the orientals and the africans were the first victims of the slavery. I wonder if she has any spinal problem. I almost feel choked to see her like this but the Image is grand..... the expression and the metalic object shine out.:O) and do I notice a comb tucked on her hair??;)
