Description

Well, after the rocket's red glare and the bombs bursting in air, I guess the flag was still there - although nowadays it seems like a shadow of its former self or an afterimage of some sort. It's been reduced to little more than a prop that our leaders wave in our faces whenever they can't rationally explain why they're doing whatever it is they're doing. Appealing to emotion is a way get around the rational part of the brain. Love isn't rational, and neither is hate. Not that there's anything wrong with emotion, but you like to think rational thought comes into play with anything that involves blowing stuff up.

Here, in Frankistan, we are a bit world-weary and suspicious when it comes to nationalism. The nationalist party stands at the extreme right of the political spectrum. We had a very nationalist neighbour for a couple of centuries and it led us to three wars, two of them having been world wars. The generation of our grand-parents was also fanatically Proud of being French, and we know where it led them : a little concrete monument in front of the town hall. We know what being bombed means. We know what being occupied by a foreign army means. Nowadays, we also know that being born in such or such country doesnt mean much. No reason to be proud of something one did nothing to deserve. We pay a reasonable amount of taxes and in return we get free education, health care and unemployment insurance. Thats a social contract ; national solidarity. Better than living in the jungle, but thats all. Nobody ever sticks a flag to his window or on his car. That would simply mean : I dont like foreigners. Nice picture.
