Awesome looking ship. I had the opportunity to ride a sail boat once...amazing how much power the wind packs, even when it's only a "breeze"

Very excellent work. The sails do look superb, the sea is just amazing with all the waves, and the image is perfect. Jed: One thing, please. I think from what I remmeber correctly, you created the ship model yourself (masterpiece I must say), but can you please turn that flag the other way? The scene is excellent.

Nice ... Now this one is really smooth and the textures in your sail is really great. Interesting how you make your models, do you use another software for creating them?

if you turn the flag towards the wind that is not good. the wind is moveing the ship and is a stong wind so you got the flag right at lest to me super job

Cornelp, the flag is correct. Only if the ship were an engine powered vehicle and moving through the water faster than the wind, would the flags stream astern. These ships, even with their many sails, only went from 3-5 to maybe 15-20 knots per hour on a good windy day. So the flags would be flowing forward as shown. That being said, Jeds' you're next step should be to put some movement/life into the flags and sails. They appear too stiff and unmoving. And the Stun's'l's (or Studdingsails, the outward sails extending from the yardarms) normally did not extend to 2 yards, as you have here, just from one. Each yard had one individual extra sail extending from it. Try watching any movie or TV show with an actual sailing ship featured in it and you will see that even in a strong wind, both sails and flags whip and flap against the masts or yards. Watch these films: Master & Commander, Damn the Defiant, any of the Bounty versions, Captain Horatio Hornblower (w/ Gregory Peck, 1951), and any of the History Channel shows on ships that are shown from time to time (specifically, The Great Ships series). Watch them closely for sail handling, sail/flag movement and wave action/reaction to the hull. As an artist I was always taught: Attention to Detail!!!! and, Research, Research...otherwise, your renders ARE getting better.

The flag isn't right. From the headsails, the wind is coming from the port, and with the square sails braced around like that, the wind is coming from the port beam - except for one factor, and that is you must consider the speed of the ship. Go sailing sometime, if only renting a little sailboat and run it around on a pond. You'll notice that rarely, very rarely will the flag ever stretch out forward. If the wind is anywhere away from the stern, whether on one side or the other, the speed of the ship makes the wind seen by the ship come from farther forward than it really is. The wind here is on the port quarter and the flag should be trailing out to starboard, and astern, because the ship's speed modifies the wind seen by it. With the wind on the port quarter, standing on that deck it would seem like the wind is from the port bow. Even if the wind were dead astern, a sleek ship with that much sail will move something like 75% of the speed of the wind or better, so with a 16-knot breeze the flag would only see 4 knots from astern. It might flutter out a little but mostly it would hang down in a tail wind. The point about the stunsls is correct. You can look it up... and you are right about the rigidity of the sails, need just a little compound curve. If they are set correctly there will be very little flutter in them tho. I'm a little worried about the quarterdeck, looks a little short to me. Just remember, only the folks who never try anything make no errors. The sky and the sea are absolutely perfect. I'd bring the foam back from the bow farther. Man, I'd like to be able to do anywhere near as well as you.
