City of Night Nearly a mile beneath the surface, deep beneath the roots of the mountain, a vast cavern extends for many leagues. Throughout its length hundreds of inverted towers have been carved into the great stalactites hanging from the stone ceiling, forming secure dwellings accessible only to those with wings. Dim illumination is provided by great swathes of luminous lichen on the stone, and by torches at the towers still inhabited, now fewer than a score. This is the ancient home of the Winged Folk, hunters of the night. The last eleven Night Lords dwell here with their dwindling entourages, in the waning days of their kind. Though greatly long-lived, they are not immortal, and the passage of centuries and millenia has seen the vanishing of their people. The few who dwell here are the last of their kin. Their women were slain long ago, and they cannot intermate with mankind. The days of their folk will soon be over, and they will live only in the memories of others until memories turn to legend, and legend fades into myth.
