Description

I was a schoolboy in the autumn of '77 when Prof. Em. Andronicus and his team of archeologists came upon the tomb of King Philipos II (father of Alexander the Great) in Vergina, an area not far from my city Thessaloniki, here in Northern Greece. Since then, I've been fascinated with the findings there and even entertained the thought of studying archeology for a while :) The theatre and painting won me over but I've always depicted the people of that era and of course now that I've the means to do so in Poser I couldn't resist! So, here's my take on a Macedonian Officer of Companions (Pezetairoi), an elite force of the Macedonian Infantry chosen by Alexander himself for being among the most able physically but also belonging to a noble class in Macedonian society. The wealthier of the Macedonians had sometimes painted images of Gods or Godesses or even former Kings on their shields. The mosaic background was found in Pompeii and is a copy of a painting by the Greek painter Apelles depicting the battle of Issus. The gold wreath with oak leaves and incredibly detailed acorns in the foreground was one of the many artifacts found in King Philip II's tomb by Prof. Andronicus. The officer depicted here is one of several characteristic types I'm making on the M3 Hoplite(coming soon).

Just in time John...Some people have strange things in mind about Macedonians and how Greek or not they were in the past or are now...I hope the best results for this situation, and these people to read more history like you my friend...Congrats for your fine work, definetely voted.---Kostas.

Jon, this looks an excellent new product and I can hardly wait to get my hands on it. Your collection of historical/fantasy clothes/armor is excellent! Oh, wishlist: thracian/peltast and cavalry (thessalian/macedonian) would be great complements to your offerings!

EXCELLENT ARTWORK!!!! Alexander the Great is my childhood hero. I was reading his story since I could read. I am also a Macedonian. I was very disappointed with the movie Alexander. Oliver Stones version is a pro-gay rights love story that completely misses the meaning behind Alexander's life and legacy. The scenes were beautiful and the costumes were magnificent but the scenario is pointless and never explains why Alexander did all that he did. It's amazing how such an awesome story could be told so terribly. Its sad that some very good actors like Anthony Hopkins (as Ptolemy), got caught up in this empty film.

I can't think of Improving this work at all :) I've always have enjoyed your work. I was just wondering if there were any ancient Greek re-enactors in your area. Might be worth looking into :) Ken
