Managed to capture this colorful atmospheric effect finally. I've seen this a number of times (without my camera handy of course!) and always wanted to capture it. Well, here it is...I don't know what this is called, but I hope you enjoy it! I'll try to catch up on some commenting tomorrow... --Mike

It's called a "sun dog"...caused by ice particles in the upper atmosphere...cool capture!

As gradient said, it is a "sun dog." I've never been able to capture one either..ya beat me to it! ;) You should send this to http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html (Astronomy Picture of the Day). They post images like this from time to time and this is a great example! Beautiful all round image too!
