Description

"Watching and Listening" Young, as older souls and another...somewhere in between as where I watch and listen to a few of my teachers, and they too watch and listen to me. Young vying for attention Old correcting the other on mention Young expressing his authority Older attempting a chase of the young In all his crippled yet determined glory His health failing his problems evident Yet he barks, barks and barks at the young Till choking and out of breath On crippled legs approaching his death He seeing reason a need to protect The feeling and the effect For thee As he continues to strive, one more day To stay alive For me In the yard they lay On a ground hard, With skies of grey Face to face There in the dirt The old can barely move In his eyes is seen hurt While the young stands proud And loud as if to say Dig, jump, and dodge Come on, come on Let's rumble old man Alternatively, shall we play? Then the teeth show Drawn up are the lips Of the old, Waiting I watch Not a time to scold He demanding respect From the young as told The younger stronger, Could surely fight harder and longer Looks they both do to me to agree to the attack I just watch, as they both stand In addition, again they look back The younger scuffs and pounces The older rises barks and denounces The youngest authority Again, they both look to me The leader of their pack Waiting for my command To ok the attack and fight to the death But as I stand to command Words heard from me That neither agrees with Nor entirely understands Still they obey, No, aloud I say, They'll be no death this day. © December 3rd 2004 R.S.T.H. Wonderfully done, amazing how we become their world and they ours isn't it? Our dogs don't know they're dogs and I sometimes wonder if I am human, but we know we are of the same family that's what's important.

I liked your poem. It was a very interesting read for me. Thank you for the description at the end. Today I am sad to say that I most put the mother of my other dog to rest today. Not the natural way, but to me I think she will be ok.

This reads almost like a poetic fable ... fluent and perceptive. Truly we can learn a lot from animal behaviour - and I thank you, my friend, for pointing this out so enjoyably.

You show a greater understanding of children than most humans... I have an old dog, over 100 pounds, tall; and a younger, 55-pound, yearling bi--- ahem, female, that can walk under his belly. All my animals are rescues, but I've had the older since he was small; when we met, he was no bigger than a small cat. Othila is gentle, though he frightens many people not used to large dogs. Rowan, on the other hand, was older when she was brought to me, and had been mistreated. She doesn't trust strangers, and although she's never bitten anyone, I feel she is the one to watch out for. She is faster that "T" and much more agile, especially now that his bones are hurting him. He has trouble standing up, while she can be over the fence before he lifts his head. Nevertheless, if she chose to challenge him, she would be on the street in a heartbeat! "Better fighter" is not "better person," and while a fighter may be treated with respect, is not better loved.

Your work is amazing, I am very impressed. If I could write as well as you do, I would probably try and do a little more with my artwork. (like actually write a story that I could animate. :) Keep up the great work!!!
