Description

A companion to the shot I uploaded yesterday. These are pine trees that basically starved to death because of intensely high levels of carbon-dioxide in the soil of this specific area of Mammoth Lakes, in the Sierra Mountains of California. It is believed that a shallow intrusion of magma beneath the mountain has resulted in carbon-dioxide concentrations of 20-90% in the soil, compared to a normal level of 1%. The gas interferes with the roots ability to take up oxygen and nutrients. Shot with Canon PowerShot A70.

Wow, this is a very remarkable place. Not without danger, as CO2 tends to keep low on the surface choking all that lives there if there's no wind. Beautiful capture!
