Description

The cavern held my breath at the waking stillness of it all. The walls held all the sounds of those who had passed through, a hundred years ago. I sat still, over the smooth surface of water, undisturbed for many years, and listened to that which passed through the halls. I heard the scurry of small creatures, curious to my presence. I tuned it out. I heard the dripping of water, oozing from some wall into a small puddle. I tuned it out. I heard the wind, in the distance, whipping itself at the cave walls, trying to get in. I tuned it out. Soon there was the only sound I could never tune out. It's steady beat grew louder, but slower. The wind came in, and let out. It was there to remind me. To remind me that I am still living and I am still breathing. The cave was there to remind me that one day I will lay as still as it does.

It's short but I have two fav parts: "The walls held all the sounds of those who had passed through, a hundred years ago. I sat still, over the smooth surface of water, undisturbed for many years, and listened to that which passed through the halls." AND "It was there to remind me. To remind me that I am still living and I am still breathing. The cave was there to remind me that one day I will lay as still as it does." :)

I agree with cagewench's assessment. I especially enjoyed the part concerning the sounds of those who had passed through, a hundred years ago. I read a touch of encouragement in it - even though one day "I will lay as still as it does", I too will become part of the sounds of those from a hundred years ago. I would still "live on" - so to speak. That's my take anyways. Great job!

I saw a womb, quiet, safe. A place of death and rebirth. Fantastic work babes.

Atmospheric and evocative ... this piece brings different gifts to different people, depending on how they see caverns in the first place: but I'd like to bet it left no-one unmoved. Kudos!

It makes one feel as a dustmote. How fragile this shell of flesh while rock and water retain their agelessness...the sound of silence beckons one to search inward.
