Description

Right behind the Jura (with the tower on top) we can see parts of the French Alps. And guess what!? The highest top of the Alps is visible here, from France over Switzerland into France again, on a distance of 248 km (155 miles)!!! I cannot remember ever have looked so far to an object on earth! Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 300 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

I used to calculate curved earth horizons. From the 200 ft. high mast of an aircaraft carrier you can see about 15 miles but from an aircraft at 35000 feet the line of sight just skims the earth at about 150 miles and you can see another aircraft also at 35000 feet about 150 miles further on for a total of 300 miles. lowering both ends of the line to the Grand Baloon and the Jura then matches your result perhaps tilted up or down at one or the other end. The equation for arc length is 2Rsin (1/2theta) Where theta is the angle at the center of the earth or the arc length of the great circle beneath the line of sight from r sub earth and r sub earth plus height h. Great emergence!! Wonderful clouds!!

This has to be one of my favourites of all time. Man, oh man you have to go digital & get rid of the noise. If I come into some money I'll pay you to go shoot this again with some top-of-the-line DSLR. Totally, 100% awesome. Thank you for sharing!!
