Description

Carnevale of Busseto January 30th, 2005 The series of the majorettes will go on (and there are other two sundays of Carnevale also still to go), but I though that it would be nice to set up some of the environment of the Carnevale also. The Carnival is a popular folk holiday in Catholic Europe, because it celebrates the days before the lent, with food and dances and masks. It is of Medieval origin, but some think it was related to some Roman celebrations also. During the Carnival, following the Medieval tradition, the "world is upside down". The poor people becomes the king, and the kings can be laughed at and made jokes of, without the people risking their lives because of that. :-) Today of course is a little different ;-) But the impertinent spirit survives. During the Carnevale, you can say and make all kind of jokes, including dirty jokes and words, and they are accepted. There is an Italian saying that goes "Di Carnevale, ogni scherzo vale", which means "During Carnival, every joke is valid". All kind of censorship is banned during the Carnevale and one can say/show/do whatever he/she likes (well, almost) ;-) I was in the streets yesterday and I heard a lot of dirty jokes and comments, including by the speaker of the event. :-) Especially directed to nice looking girls ;-) But no one gets offended, it's carnevale :-) It was fun and all people (especially children!) had a lot of fun. :-) The Carnevale in Busseto is officially celebrated by the city since 124 years (but it exists as popular feast since much more time!) Busseto is a very small town near river Po, quite close to my hometown. The composer Giuseppe Verdi was born there (or to be precise, in a small village near Busseto called Roncole). The people in Busseto are very proud about him and they feature images of Verdi practically everywhere around the town :-) (I will show some) Thanks for viewing :-)
