Description

This photo was taken several nights ago just after sunset as the full moon rose over the lake behind my house. The sky was clear and the lake's surface was glassy, reflecting things quite nicely and making for a serene mood. Olympus C5050 and PhotoshopCS -------- "Why does the moon appear larger when it is near the horizon?" This "moon illusion" is mind-baffling since the horizon and elevated moons are actually the same size and distance away from earthly viewers. Others who have written about the moon illusion over the years include such notable scientists as: Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Johann Kepler and Rene Descartes. A renewed interest in this subject has sparked new research in recent years. The debate is divided among many theories, two of which are: "The Apparent Distance" theory and the "Visual Angle Illusions" theory. This is a complicated and confusing subject I suggest that you read articles on all of the theories and then decide for yourself. Many people think this is a real phenomenon, perhaps some sort of magnification caused by the atmosphere. The eye is tricked into measuring the moon against nearby objects such as buildings trees and hills. These types of objects, which are located on most horizons, create the illusion of increased size. The scientific term for this is called oculomotor macropsia. The fact is, this is strictly an optical illusion!

Moon Illusion is similar to the Ponzo Illusion or commonly called the "Railroad Track Illusion". Still complicated for me, lol. Excellent capture with a fantastic topic. Aloha http://griffithobs.org/IPSMoonIllus.html

Thanks cynlee, and everyone else who has commented. By the way, the specs in the water are stars, not digital noise. :)

Very interesting, about the illusion. I will have to pay additional attention to this the next time I see the moon as appearing bigger in the horizon. Thank you for this. P.S. Got a new image up "Be Mine". Valentines Day is near! KP
