Description

As you already noticed, the water is brown (contaminations all along the river, from Switzerland through Germany entering the Netherlands). Not good for the environment... but in this particular situation the sepia color makes this somewhat unusual. The ice-layer is thin, so you can only walk on the parts not above the streaming water. I remember times when parts of the river entirely frozen but even then it's dangerous: if you might crack in a blow-hole the streaming water will push you under the ice-covering. The inundated forelands, however, provide in some winters very good opportunities for ice-skating. In very cold winters we have our so called Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour), an ice-skating tour of 200 km (124 miles) through 11 cities all over frozen lakes and canals. Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 70 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

A very believable story about people who live and play on the river. I am quite timid toward rivers having gained my knowledge of ice and winter weather in a swamp with ditches and pools. Even then coming home with "soakers" was part of the year. The january thaw made the very edge near the bank detach and the ice would tip.

The crack on the left edge tells the story - be careful on the ice! Too bad about the pollution - I wondered why the ice looks so dark. Nicely done!

Hey, this image works great. The play off light of the shapes of the ice and water ripples is brilliant. I appreciate you risking your life to get this shot, but don't take too many chances my friend! ;)

Yes, I remember the river Lek was frozen completely back in 1985 and also in 1986. Huge ice mountains all over the.. what once was.. the river. This picture remembers me of that time.
