Description

- Scotland - Later on my way I passed this lonesome and unexpected manor close to the wood and hidden by trees. When I stopped I couldn't beleave that it was deserted and forgotten. With all the silence around it almost looked eerie. The dark and broken windows were staring into the rain.

* * * Surprise !* * *

Yesterday I got a surprising mail from John (WeeLaddie) and he told me that he was amazed to see the "deserted manor" featured in a television documentary called "Scotland's Secret War", and this first instalment was called "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare". The house is called "Inverailort House" and it began as a farmhouse which was enlarged and converted to a shooting lodge in 1875; and further additions were added in 1891. It was owned by the Cameron-Head family, but in 1940 it was commandeered by the War Office and used as a special training centre for the SOE (Special Operations Executive). They were responsible for training undercover agents during the war, who would then be sent off to create havoc behind enemy lines. Two famous visitors during the war years were the actor David Niven who took a course there, and the infamous spy Kim Philby who trained agents in how to live undercover in foreign countries. The SOE was disbanded when the war ended, and the house was abandoned and left to crumble as a testament to a bygone age. Thanks a lot, John! ;o) And thanks for stopping by and all your intersting comments! ;o)

It's in a wonderful setting, what, with the Scotch mist rolling down the hills ... you didn't happen to see a For Sale sign anywhere. Great shot.

Too expensive to keep up I suppose. What a shame. It's a super photo. Did you go inside? It used to be in Scotland that you had to pay tax on each window so they bricked up a lot of them. If you took off the roof there was no tax at all which made a lot of them fall down! I don't know what the law is nowadays.

Wirklich unglaublich das so eine phantastische Anlage verlassen ist. Die Wiese sieht aber ganz gepflegt aus. Vielleicht erlebt das Schloss ja bald wieder bessere Zeiten...

Excellent shot . The fog in the hills outlines the property very well . You did an excellent job on the frame as well . I usually don't care for frames at all , but you seem to have a unique talent for matching them to the picture at hand :)

Gorgeous shot... so stately and, sadly, forgotten. It looks like a fixer-upper, but will do in a pinch.

You deserve all the compliments above, and it's great to read all the comments too. I love Scotland, but haven't managed to visit for about 5 years. Great to have a virtual tour, brings back many happy memories. Great photo, but sad too. The mist adds very much to the emotion of you image. More, please!

The first this I noticed was the special framing of the picture, but then I saw the picture itself and I think both are beuatiful.
