Description
This is somewhat out of order with the rest of the series, but I wanted to post it for Michelle, as she asked about the mirror lens. I *think* this used the 600mm f/8 Sigma mirror, from way across the primate enclosure. [I have others, I'll post later, but this is the more "normal" looking one.] This mirror lens is really quite sharp. But, being such a long focal length has all the drawbacks to long tele's; short DOF, and very problematic if either the photographer or the subject moves. Had I known that most of the primates there on this day were of the heavily furred variety, I would have brought the tripod. [Usually too crowded in the primate house for a tripod.]
An issue unique to the mirror lens is the fixed, and relatively small aperature. Under dim conditions my old eyes just can't focus.
Other than that, it is hard to beat a mirror for light-weight. But it's really a bright sun lens.
