------------- Did you hear something?

Dylen wasn't exactly new to this. She'd been adventuring for a few years, ever since her mother died and left her with nothing but debtors chasing her. Her mother's business wasn't what she wanted out of life, nor was a marriage to some popinjay in order to pay off her mother's debts. So she set off into the jungle one day and just didn't look back. After living in Taipai all her life, she'd thought she'd seen everything. She'd learned how to pick a lock, swing a sword and even weave a spell or two. But the jungle taught her something else, she was small and unimportant, less than a snack to some of the beasts that wandered the dark places of the world. But she also learned that most of those beasts had no concept of their own existence. It took humans and their ilk to go beyond life and death. It took humans and their defiance of the natural order to create undead.

So when she came across a complex buried beneath the jungle in Hilikari, and found that animals wouldn't approach within a mile of the place, she knew she'd found something. With her trusted familiar, Rawl, she headed in, confident in her magic and her sword arm to see her through. After two levels of minor undead, she found a chamber that resisted her every effort to open. But in her rush for adventure, she'd lost track of time. As the night settled on the jungle outside, something dark awoke inside the impenetrable tomb. If she had known that this complex was built by Drow, it might not have mattered to her. If she knew that the leader of that Drow force was named Lathandris, it probably wouldn't have meant anything to her, either. If she'd known that Lathandris had been Vorhing's most powerful apprentice and that the corporeal body of the Arch-Liche Lathandris had been destroyed half a world away over thirty years ago,...

As she passed the chamber on her way out, Rawl beside her, she thought she heard a slight whisper. Nothing clear, nothing identifiable. Rawl obviously heard something to, as he turned his head and started to growl. There was something stirring in the ancient tomb.
