Description

Today I invite you to accompany me on a stroll through an area with dry ice. Due to deforestation in the 18th and 19th centuries sands have emerged on several places in the Netherlands. They need to be cultivated else the grasses will keep the sand together and trees will eventually repopulate this area. This sand, the Wekeromsche Zand, is exposed to the winds and when it has snowed under freezing temperatures, the wind blows sand and ice together. And sometimes it results in unexpected mixtures. Very beautiful. Looks so lonely, perhaps because of the footsteps to the right. Very well succeeded shot!

while i'm saddened to learn about the deforestation, i'm excited to feel the sand between my toes...even if it is a bit chilly here!!! crunch...oops...that was a little ice! What a fascinating and beautiful image...never seen anything like this before...that sand/snow/ice mixture. i love the sparkles on the sand, as well as the swirls and footprints! do you know what kind of grass that is in the sand? it's not sea oats is it? and this is NOT a coastal image is it??? I love this place and would have a most enjoyable time here if it was a bit warmer!!! Fabulous capture of this most fascinating place with its unusual elements!!!

Nice, quite a different subject, Jan_Carel, but still the ice, although the textures and grass are welcome. ( We are getting some more snow today in Scotland, I think. ) The grass, like esparto etc, stops the erosion and keeps dunes together against the onslaught of storms and strong tides. Is this in reclaimed 'polder' land, perhaps? Regards, John.

Yes, you are right.. this is very beautiful. The combination of dry sand and ice looks a bit weird.. cause sand is considered to be dry and ice is'not dry at all. Anyway, this picture is awesome cause of it's textures and the light.
