Description

::: Part 36 of a series of Warbird Photos ::: Taken at the Planes of Fame Museum - Chino Airport, California on Saturday, February 5th, 2005. For more, see http://www.warbird-photos.com Got another very awesome opportunity for an air-to-air photo session. This time, it was with a Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk XIX (recon counter rotating prop) and a Lockheed P-38J Lightning. This here is the museum's Lockheed P-38J Lightning 'Porky II.' She went on a east coast tour last year with a few other Planes of Fame Aircraft, and has flown with the very famous P-38 'Glacier Girl' many times. At one time, the Planes of Fame Museum had 3 P-38 lightnings... 'Porky II', 'Glacier Girl' (she was visiting), and a P-38L Lightning. She's very gorgeous and big to see fly. The P-38 was nicknamed Der Gabelschwanz Teufel (The Fork Tailed Devil) by the Germans in World War 2 because of the P-38's unique (still to this day!) design. The P-38 has counter rotating propellars, which can be very difficult to fly. Very few in the world to this day are checked out to fly a P-38. The P-38 was used as a fighter, and also as one of the 'big three' to protect the bombers during runs (the big three being P-51 Mustangs, P-47 Thunderbolts, and P-38 Lightnings in the European Theater). Camera is a Canon Rebel EOS 300D DSLR (6mp) with a Canon 28-105mm lens. Image was reduced in size.
