Description

::: Part 37 of a series of Warbird Photos ::: Taken at the Planes of Fame Museum - Chino Airport, California in November of 2004. For more, see http://www.warbird-photos.com As requested in the previous image post, here's a photo I took of the very famous Lockheed P-38F Lightning (dare I say most famous!) 'Glacier Girl.' She has QUITE the history about her. N5757 She stopped by for a few days at the Planes of Fame Museum. Got to do a 'ground' photo session with her shortly before she departed for Palm Springs. She's definatly a gorgeous bird. The armnament is real (but not loaded in the photo) and was fired over New Zealand if memory recalls. Part of the 'Lost Squadron' of P-38 and B-17s that were forced to land in Greenland on a glacier. While all the pilots were picked up, the planes were lost and forgotten. The P-38 was fliped upside down on landing, and remained that way from the mission in 1942 till 1992 when a team discovered the P-38 in the glacier several hundred feet bellow the surface! After the very dangerous task of bringing her up from the ice, it then took 10 years (1992-2002) to restore her back to flying status. She made her first restored flight on October 26th, 2002. She was dubbed 'Glacier Girl' for obvious reasons. Currently she has been travelling to different airshows around the country. Camera is a Canon Rebel EOS 300D DSLR (6mp) with a Canon 28-105mm lens. Image was reduced in size.

Thanks for posting and for the info. Want to show this to my wife - her Grandfather flew a P38 in WWII. He is an amazing man - as all those pilots were (talk about The Right Stuff). Great shot of a beautiful plane with a terrific history. Great Job!!!

I Love P-38's. I saw the National Geographic special and the magazine issue on this plane. Neat that the guns still fired after so long under the ice.
