Description
This 5m diameter (16 feet) waterwheel survives in an underground chamber in an abandoned Welsh metal mine.
It was used initially to raise kibbles (buckets) of material from a shaft (hence the drum by the person), later it was altered to work a chain pump to remove water as the shaft got deeper.
Its a 'back-shot' wheel, water came in from top middle of picture, causing the wheel to rotate anti-clockwise. Techno Stuff
The water cascading down the wheel makes it tricky to light without getting clouds of mist (the posing figure had to hold his breath for at least 30 seconds before the exposure!).
To light the scene 3 flash guns were used, triggered by slave units from the on camera flash - the camera was a small Kodak Easyshare DX4530, so its flash was no use for lighting the scene, but worked well for triggering the others.

I just looked at your series of pictures on mines. Excellent work by the way. I know the pain staking time and patience it took to capture some of these shots. Thanks for sharing as I'm a coal miner's dtr and I always enjoy looking at these types of shots. My father worked in the mines in West Virginia for 27 years.

I am glad I have found these. I find old mines very interesting and I spend some time exploring the old tin mines around Cornwall. Thanks for sharing these excellent images :-)
