Description

This is actually just a test image that turned out better than expected. I was trying out a tree-placement script for a forest to add to my previous sky image. The test turned out so well, I decided to post it as an image in its own right. Done in a freeware program called pov-ray. The trees were generated by a pov script (macro) called TomTree. The landscape is a heightfield generated from within pov. The trees were rotated and randomly placed on the heightfield with another pov script. Each tree has over 50,000 polygons, and there are 50 altogether in the scene (some offscreen), so there's over 2.5 million polys for just the trees alone, plus another 160,000 polys for the land. This rendered in just under 8 hours with full antialiasing--which isn't bad on a 266 mhz pentium II laptop. *smile* Still needs some tweaking. I'm particularly trying to work on the leaves to make them a little more translucent (for backlighting), and I also have plans to add fully 3d grass and shrubs for the ground, perhaps some rounded appalachian hills in the background, and better composition. But this was just a test image..

Very nice. I;ve been using Povray a bit, but still need to learn about trees, rolling hills, and paths like you put together nicely in the render.
