Description

Looking Back Down at the same area from my last post "Heading Back Up", you can see that we're fairly high up. The haze in the atmosphere is from the volcano "VOG". When the tradewinds are not blowing, this vog can become very thick for all the Islands of Hawaii and sometimes causes health problems for some. Along side the ocean is a place called "Halape". On Nov 29, 1975 early in the morning, a Kalapana earthquake of a magnitude about 7.2 rocked this area. There were 32 campers, some were opihi pickers and others were a boys scout troop. With the roar of the rocks coming down from a cliff, most ran towards the ocean. Then the sea rose, a Tsunami came. The campers ran back towards the cliffs where the rocks was coming down. The Wave did catch them. One Opihi picker was never found and a Doctor (Boy scout troop leader) either drowned or was battered from the falling rocks. All the boy scouts kids were safe. The earthquake lights lit up the sky that morning. Aloha and thank you for viewing

The volcano creates such desolation in its path...miles of blackend land, its almost like looking at an alien planet. Excellent pov, and compo. Beautiful capture. (Ps. I hope you take care on your treks!) =)

amazing that plant life returns so quick, but considering how rich the lava is in nutrients it is not a surprise. excellent capture and I have never been to Hawaii as of yet.

breathtaking view you show us!!!! that sky & terrain with its gradient pastels is gorgeous & i love how it totally contrasts with the lava formations! interesting to see that there are some plants that cannot only grow in that stuff, but also thrive!!! i so much enjoyed your narrative!!! and the photography...heavenly!

Wonderful view down from this altitude! Not without danger, this world. It smees to go together very frequently, beauty and power! Excellent shot and thank you for sharing this story! It emphasizes once again the importance of a good quake alarming system!
