Description

Even after sunset there's still a lot to enjoy! Around 9.15 pm I decide to make a stroll. The sky is clear and the stars seem to shine brighter than ever. The absence of city-lights allows me to observe the stunning details of the dazzling night sky. Orion is a well-known constellation and I've added the names of some stars of this constellation together with Aldebaran, Sirius and the planet Saturn.
  • Aldebaran is a red giant star, with a diameter about 40 times that of the sun, at a distance of 60 light-years.
  • Betelgeuse is also a red giant star, with a diameter 630 times that of the Sun, at a distance of 425 light-years.
  • Rigel is a blue giant star, with a diameter 65 times that of the Sun, at a distance of 775 light-years and it shines with the light of 40,000 Suns.
  • Sirius is the brightest star in the sky after the Sun, at a distance of 8.6 light-years.
  • Saturn is a planet at a distance of 1.3 billion km ( = 0.00014 light-years), and like all planets it moves through the sky.

Orion used to be up above my spa in the winter. I could look up and have something unearthly. I remembered that he had seven league boots.

Astronomy 101! Takes me back a good many years to a dreaded test where I had to identify objects in the night sky.

Remarkable composition, and Orion's belt right in the center of it all - well done indeed!

I am jealous.. living in the city now has taken many things away from me, such as being able to apperciate the night sky... Wonderful presnetation, clarity, and information!! Love the stars... one day perhaps we will be able to explore the rest of the galaxy.
