Description
A Tribute To Samuel Scott (English painter) 1702-1772.
Olde England : Scene behind A Coastal Town.
Samuel Scott is best known for his great seafaring battle scenes, great ships locked in mortal combat. He also painted Landscapes, particularly of London and The Thames. He was also a painter of working class country towns. These were not pretty scenes, rather drab and dreary, capturing more the atmosphere of working class life. Everything was subdued, no fair meadows with butterflies fluttering in the summer sun.
As I was working with this terrain and trying different mats, this scene came in to view and I immediately thought of Samuel Scott. I think it is a scene he would have painted had he came across it on his travels. I interpret it as a scene behind a coastal town in England in the 18th Centurty. The grass is unkempt, drab and dull, the water is turbulent rather than calm inviting a feeling of high activity in the town over yonder. There are no pretty flowers here. It's a working town, and flowers wasn't Scott's style.
