Description

Made with Vue 5 Esprit! (not Infinite :P ) Again 1 piece terrain, i wanted to try and make a very big landscape and yet this has only 90,000 polygons! I am trying to write a tutorial on procedural terrains although due to my limited time and the fact i plan on a detailed tutorial it may be a while until it is finished. I can tell you this terrain is formed out of a simple fractal of Perlin Noises/Gradient type with rotation. I filtered this with a custom altitude filter which gave a very satisfactory look by itself and forms the main shape of the terrain. Then to add some more interesting and unusual features i used a second fractal of Distributed Patterns/Round Sample with rotation and a simple turbulence node connected to the origin. This is resposible for the twisted and knotted looking ridges. The 2 fractals are then mixed using a simple add combiner. I didn't spend very long on this, around 2hrs all up excluding render time, sure there is a lot that could be fixed but the point is it does not take long to create a unique and cool looking terrain. Comments and questions welcomed. Thanks -Jeff

Very interesting "terraforming". IMHO you did a great job. Like already been said the POV is very well chosen, since it creates a nice sense of wideness. Keep it up! And I'm looking forward to your tutorial. :)))

Fantastic work again, landscape programs have come so far in just a few years, the future of digital art is very exciting. We the general public are just now getting the advantages of what Hollywood and the big film companies have had for years. you are doing amazing things with this and I much look foward to seeing more.......V....John

You realluy must complete that turorial you're working on. I'm also trying to figure out the "secrets" behind procedural terrains but I haven't got near as far as you have. The background mountains are a little to edgy and sharp... but that's just my opinion. The foreground terrain is really nice though!

I finally managed to make one, but the materials are still beyond me. You did an excellent job with the materials here. Any chance you would share the mats so I can see how it is done?

Fantastic picture, and I too cannot wait for the tutorial - I really don't understand how you've managed to constrain the twisted/knotty features to the lower altitudes...

Oh how many times I have followed your instructions (or should I say explanation) above only to fail again and again. This is (in my opinion) one of the best looking examples of procedural terrain work. The textures are beautiful and the detail and lighting are perfect. Well done and keep up the excellent work. You have my vote:)
