Description

Top - The church of St Lawrence was built in 1434 of stone & brick in the Perpendicular style. Middle - The chancel was restored in 1873 and the rest of the church 1878-1880. Wall paintings of Lincolnshire Saints adorn the chancel walls. Bottom - Bequests from generous benefactors as read and copied from the board: - Joseph Knowles an apprentice of London & son of Richard Knowles Senior of Bardney deceased. This Joseph at the age of 25 years departed this life the 10 day of August in the year of 1603. Who by his last Will & Testament, dated the second day of August in the same year amongst divers other good & charitable gifts did give 30 pound to some of his trusty friends of Bardney to be bestowed on land for the use & benefit of the poor that are & hereafter shall be of this Town & parish of Bardney for ever. The Rents & profits of such lands yearly to be bestowed in bread & to be given weekly every Sunday immediately after morning prayer to 12 poor people of the Town & parish of Bardney every one to the value of one penny. John Knowles Senior & bachelor of this parish of Bardney in the year of 1603. Did also give ten pounds towards the furthering of the gift of his nephew Io Knowles before named to make an amount to the sum of 12 pence the week aforesaid to the same & only use & uses of the poor inhabitants of this Town & parish of Bardney they are and shall be for ever. St Luke X 37 Go & do thou likewise. Bardney was famous for its Sugar Beet Factory, the aroma of which could be smelled for miles around. The town was at a railway junction with Lincoln, Boston and Louth and the stretch from Bardney to Louth survived for 75 years until 1951. The line from Lincoln to Boston was opened in 1848 and lasted until 1970 and was a favourite with Sheffield anglers who enjoyed pleasure fishing the nearby River Witham. Bardney was once a slight island in the marshy ground around the Witham. The 'ey' part of the name means island, and it was named after the Saxon landowner or chief, Bearda - hence Bearda's 'ey' (Bearddanig), from which the name Bardney has evolved. There is a bit a thing going on about ratings. The fors and againsts and the fairness and all that. If people find enjoyment out of rateing then thats fine by me. Personally, I rate others because they've asked for it, but I see no competition in this as I don't care if I get rated or not. The reason I allow it is because it may stop someone long enough to want speak to me and acknowledge me as a person. I don't regard my images as artform because, apart from the churches, none of them were taken with anyone else in mind, purely for myself. The Lincolnshire church images I want to make available to the public one day to draw profit and help restore our heritage. I never joined RR to show my work, it was for the enjoyment of seeing what everyone else does. Thank you friends.

I believe that's, 'Go thou and do likewise'. I'd like to, as I surely do admire this presentation. I'm a major UK-ophile and this was a real treat. Thank you.

Amazing! the green grass in the upper photo is splendid. The tombstones, here and ther over it are an excellen example of those so beauty british cemeteries. And, what to say about that wonderful stained glass window?! What to say about that wonderful triptich... that altar... this wonderful tribute, in gothic letters, to people who loved all that! Thank you!!!

Another fascinating montage, along with some interesting background facts - Joseph Knowles sounds like he was quite a wealthy or well connected apprentice, as do the rest of his relatives!
