Description

The church of St Helen at Brigsley is sited on Saxon and Norman foundations and its history can be seen almost entirely within the western tower. The base is of Norman origin, followed by a thirteenth-century lancet window, fifteenth-century battlements and four eighteenth-century gargoyles. The nave is a patchwork, with eighteenth-and nineteenth-century wooden traceried windows occupying the blocked up arcades. (Arcades were the division between the nave and an isle and so this church was definitely wider than it is now, at least there is evidence of this on the outer wall of the north side). The chancel is Decorated (first half of fourteenth-century). The altar rails and pulpit are eighteenth-century. The pulpit has a Tester (Sounding board) for projecting the voice. At the west end of the nave are two boards bearing the Ten Commandments. Outside an archway is visible on the gable end of the nave. It has been blocked off and sheeted over with lead. It appears that this was at one time the end wall of the church and contained a large window which had to be blocked off when the chancel was added. However I cannot find any written evidence to substantiate this. The village of Brigsley is about 7 miles from the Port of Grimsby which was once famous for its fishing industry, however it is now almost non existent. I think you can still buy fish and chips :) Many thanks for sharing an interest.

I still cant work out how you get such great details in these supersize photos & keep them under the RR limit. Another great montage & an interesting piece of work by ysvry too. I hope you manage to get as far as Spurn Head sometime (do I mean Spurn Point?). You could have a few guessing which country you were in with shots from there!! Steve.
