Description
This is just a fun image I took this past weekend. My in-laws live in a small, country town that has a train museum. I haven't visited it yet, but I saw this parked outside so I stopped and snapped off a few shots. I have not idea how old it is or even what it is exactly, but I'm guessing it is some sort of old steam engine.
I'd like to dedicate this image to escafeld (Dave) and MossSphere (Kelvin), both of who like either trains or old rusty machinery.

There are apear numerous iinteresting features one may wish to photograph up close and create a sort of industrial abstract composition/look to the photograph, as I find this a rather interesting piece of machinery. Well done my friend Kort. ;~)

Its rocket science from the past. I bet during the old days when the horse and buggy was a must, this little steam engine shocked the world with its invention. The minds of people saying, "What are they going to build next with all this technology?" lol. And life continues into the computer world. Excellent capture of this historical steam engine. Aloha

This is not just a fun picture, IMHO. This is a testimony of a 'golden' era that is ending although most people in the world is not aware of that yet ! I LOVE THIS PHOTO !!!

What we're looking at is the steam equivalent of a portable electrical generator. The steam engine would have been towed by a horse team to the work site, where it would be fired up. The two broad wheels on the top would be connected to belts that would drive farm equipment like a hay baler or construction equipment like a saw.

Reminds me of an old piece of farm machinery - used to drive the belts that run the corn grinder - as best I can recall from my days on the farm :) - Nice photo work !

Kort this is absolutely fantastic, thank you so much. As Greg (SoulEater) says it was used as a means of power to drive other machinery like corn grinders, threshers, even ploughs. Two would be used, one at either end of a field. First one would pull the plough and then the other would pull it back again. Similarly I have seen two used to dredge a small pond/lake. They also drove circular saws and stuff like that. I shall add this to my favourites, thanks again. Dave :)

The machine above would have simply been called in its day, a Steam Engine." Note the wheels are not set for a track, and the axle furthest from view has pivots for steering. An implement like this could be pulled along behind a team of horses for bailing hay, or for use in applications such as a saw mill. You will notice on the top a set of flywheels. This is how you would attach, by leather belts, the other implement machines as mentioned above.

A nice pile of rust there 8) I think you've got your answer to its use in the comments above, but these portable engines were quite popular even when traction engines (ones that could move themselves along) took over particularly for agricultural use - I've seen market gardens using them quite recently, although only to generate steam for heating greenhouses (glasshouses) or steralising compost!
