I took this shot earlier today. I spent about two hours using multiple shots to increase the DOF. Lots of work but I think it paid off. If anyone can see a flaw that I have overlooked please point it out. I am too tired to tell right now.
There are a few different varieties of this fly. I haven't been able to identify this one.
Hoverflies mimic bees, while this fly mimics the bumblebee.

Wow, that is one amazing macro of a really cool "bug"...is he wearing sun-glasses? Looks like it, lol. Excellent work!
RedundantlyAbundant
Yeah, it looks like he is wearing aviators! Fitting.

Hmmm, I recognize him! He's Leonardo di Caprio trying to play Howard Hughes! Isn't he? Wonderful macro, captain!

A superb image Matt yeah they mimic them for quite sinister reasons. it is a Bee Fly I am sure and no doubt Enmos will tell us
Raven_427

I've never quite seen anything like him before...he's so fuzzy!!! lol. His eyes look kind of sad or maybe he's just tired and sleepy like yourself. ;) Fantastic capture Matt!
Enmos
Truly awesome shot here Matt !! Amazing composition and colors !! The grey color would indicate Bombylius (Zephyrectes) incanus: http://www.giffbeaton.com/Bee%20Flies/Bee%20Fly3_2003-05-08.jpg But the wing patterns look like those of Bombylius major: http://www.giffbeaton.com/2004-03-17_WBP2_EarlyCo.jpg Its probably Bombylius major though, maybe a subspecies or a young specimen. At any rate superb work !!! :o)

Wow! This guy looked more cooperative. Where the hell you found him and the leaf with background is a beautiful thing. It's what makes great shots. Good hunting on your part. KP

What an unusual looking Blighter...perfection in presentation.

When I found him it had just stopped raining. I have noticed that flies tend to go for a nap in the rain. I actually had to clip off some rose buds that were in the way to make this a better composition. Enmos- thanks so much for the links!

Matt, you know I'm not that crazy about bugs. And I have seen much more macros of bugs than I'd wish for. But this is definitely one of the five best macro shots I've ever seen. Congratulations, you did a marvellous job :)

Wow Enmos, too much info! ;) Great shot Matt....can you explain what you meant by using multiple shots to get greater DOF? Different shots taken at the same time with different focus points? Whatever you did, it worked out great...no flaws I see. Oh, I see you caught him napping. Still like to hear about the multiple shot method.
