Description

Thanks for viewing !! :o) -- I planned to upload 'Hoverfly mimic #3' but that will have to wait. I really need to upload some pics in the right order. Todays image is this wonderful caterpillar i found. This species is supposed to hibernate as a butterfly and not as a caterpillar but i found a caterpiller of this species as early as march 21st. Two weeks before that the temperature was still below zero. Now, the eggs take about two weeks to hatch but at first the caterpillars all live together in a group. Only in a later stadium they become solitary. This caterpillar i found was solitary for sure.... so the only thing i can conclude is that it must have hibernated !! Btw. the shot you see here was taken the day before yesterday (tuesday) but it still seems a bit early to me especially since their foodplant, the Stinging Nettle, is only just beginning to show its face. Anyways, tomorrow i will show you a member of this species that DOES do things by the book ;o) Hope you like :o) - Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my last upload, "Hoverfly Mimicry #2" !! Btw. by "please excuse the poor shot" i meant that it was really not a very interesting shot and the composition sucked too. :o) Hey, i can call my own work poor if i want to !! ;oP -- Many thanks, Jeroen

Great shot. Is that one of those caterpillars that walks around in enormous chains of caterpillars? There are ones in Spain that do that and a lot of people have a really bad allergic reaction to them. i knew a village where they had 44 cases of people affected by them. Poor doctor was exhausted!
