Description

- Scotland, Loch Duich, Dornie - When reaching the romantic Eilean Donan Castle in Loch Duich near Dornie I could see the tourists escape from the heavy rain. So I could take a shot without people. But I also was disappointed to get to this wonderful place and having such a bad weather again. ;o( It is the most photographed castle in Scotland. It sits on a small island, reached only by a stone bridge and is truly a picturesque setting. The wind there carries a myriad of tales of MacRaes, MacKenzies and many a warrior in its wisper. Movies: "Highlander", "Braveheart", "James Bond - Tomorrow never dies" und "Rob Roy". ****************************** History: The castle has had a rather chequered past. Originally built in 1220 by Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings, it subsequently became a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth) who installed the MacRaes as hereditory keepers. Then in 1719, it was destroyed whilst acting as a garrison for Spanish troops fighting for the Jacobite cause on behalf of the 5th Earl of Seaforth. Restoration work was only started two hundred years later and not completed until 1932. ****************************** Die Urspr

You were lucky it rained - otherwise it would have been swarming with people & cars to spoil it. Well worth getting wet!

I'm glad it was raining so no people got in the way of this great shot! And it wouldn't have the same mood without the dark, rain-spattered waves :) fav

"Wildly here, without control Nature reigns and rules the whole; In that sober pensive mood, Dearest to the feeling soul, She plants the forest, pours the flood, Life's poor day I'll musing rave And find at night a sheltering cave, Where waters flow and wild woods wave, By bonie Castle Gordon" - Robbie Burns - wrong castle, I know, but seems to fit.

When I was there I got constantly frustrated by fat-headed tourists walking inthe way of my shot. Perhaps the rain was a good thing. I think you are incorrect about the castle being used in Rob Roy though.
