Description

'Wild Grass Bending to the Breeze' Duo-tone ~ March 31, 2005 Comments: Having changed focus but not location, we still find ourselves on the grounds of the dynamite factory's power plant. The last few years nature has reclaimed much of her ground as wild raspberry bushes dot the landscape along with thick patches of crimson clovers, California poppies, along with several cactus species and an assortment of grasses, they will fall victim the weed cutter already buzzing. Yet when there is stillness, we hear the joyous sounds of birds. The comments to yesterdays posting of 'Soon Not to Be'. and the loss of this structure are all understandable. Yet like any story, there are two sides to it. Having seen first hand the inside of the structure and grounds surrounding the buildings and witnessed its continued vandalism and destruction within a span of five weeks, there is no other choice but to remove all traces of it. But our story does not end here. From what I have learned, is that the building was vacated about fifteen years ago because of asbestos having been used in its construction. It is at this point that the city failed is community while the community failed itself by remaining silent. While recent residential developments are only a football field or two away from this structure today, fifteen years ago, this area was an industrial emptiness and only a few office parks were even close by. What could have happened did not and so we loose not only a beautiful industrial structure that would have enhanced the landscape, but we have lost an opportunity. The location and building could have been saved. While keeping the main brick building, the other structures could have all been removed and the grounds completely cleared for the construction of three to four dozen smaller cottage size structures. These in turn would be artist studios essential for the creation and development of art. The main building would become the gallery where the fruits of the artists labor would be on display and for sale. Even a small office park would have worked, but fifteen years ago this land was not valuable enough to reclaim it. Of course, such things are only pipe dreams as money for the advancement of art is a myth. As of now, I do not know what is going to happen to the land once it is cleared in the next four to five months. Maybe the area will become a park for the community who's houses are encroaching upon its boundaries. Wow, what a back story. The history of a place can be fascinating. Meanwhile, nature's timeless gaze looks on from your serene photo for the day. I really like the tonal range of this one. :`)

Again beautiful rich tones in this as in so much of your work...... One can only hope they make it into something beautiful. I really do despise development, what the world does not need (despite contrary opinions from developers, is another strip mall or tightly packed subdivision).... blech....
