Description

Taken a couple of days ago late afternoon, this image has almost no postwork save for the frame and some levels adjustment and color balancing. My wife and I did some work on our garden Sunday and this is a new plant by our lightpost that we got because of it's gorgeous little purple blossoms and the fact that butterflies are attracted to its flowers. Olympus C8080 and PhotoshopCS ----- "It is so small a think to have enjoyed the sun, to have lived light in the spring, to have loved, to have thought, to have done." -Matthew Arnold "In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." -Margaret Atwood "To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life." -John Burroughs ----- Thank you terrypom (Teresa) for identifying this plant! You are a fellow Floridian and know your stuff! :o] DURANTA ERECTA Family: Verbenaceae (verbena or vervain family) Common Names: golden dewdrop, pigeonberry, skyflower Description: Golden dewdrop is a sprawling, sometimes vinelike tender evergreen shrub or small tree that can get up to 18 ft (5.5 m) tall and just as wide. It usually forms a multi-stemmed clump with branches that droop and trail. The ovate leaves are 1-3 in (2.5-7.6 cm) long and arranged on the stem in pairs opposite each other, or in whorls of three. Some bushes are quite spiny, and some have no spines at all. The showy flowers bloom almost all year long in terminal or lateral clusters (racemes, actually) up to 6 in (15.2 cm) long. The individual flowers are tubular with five petals, light blue to violet or purple, and flare out at the mouth about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) across. The fruit is a spherical yellow drupe about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) in diameter borne in showy hanging bunches. Location: Golden dewdrop is native to scrub and open woodlands in the West Indies and Central and South America. It occurs also in disturbed areas in southern Florida where it is generally believed to have been introduced, although some authors have suggested that it might be native to the Florida Keys. Golden dewdrop also has become established in southern Texas. Usage: Golden dewdrop is used as a small street tree in southern Florida. It is often used as a specimen shrub or in a hedge or windbreak. Create a hedge for butterflies and hummingbirds with golden dewdrop. Features: This is a very showy shrub with pretty blue flowers that attract butterflies and bright golden berries that are relished by songbirds - both often present on the plant at the same time. Golden dewdrop is recommended as a nectar plant in subtropical butterfly gardens. Individual plants may sprawl, but it is not invasive. WARNING! The attractive fruits are poisonous to humans. Do not use this shrub in childrens' play areas. (info taken from Floridata.com)

Almost looks unreal. Maybe the photo is upside down? The lighting comes from the bottom and it could be because of a fill card. Mmmm, yup, another look and it's upside down! Oh well, it does not hurt to turn things around and see the world from a different perspective. Take care Kort, I finally managed 10 hours of sleep so I'll get to the eMail later today. So do I get the prize?
