Description

I found this female Anhinga sunning itself on the shore of a nearby park yesterday. It looked like it had just spent a good part of the day diving for fish and was drying itself out. It is a water bird but does not have oil glands for waterproofing its feathers. When it goes swimming its feathers get wet helping it dive and chase fish underwater. However when it is above water, it must spread its wings to dry in the sun. I love the way these birds swim through the water and pop just there heads up like little submarine periscopes before disappearing back beneath the surface. You see a lot of them in Florida, especially during this time of year. Have a great weekend and I hope you get to go and enjoy a little sun too! ----- Olympus C8080 & PhotoshopCS ----- ANHINGA Common Names:

Great picture! Especially after reading what's really going on here. At first I though this was some sort of mating display, to draw in the male. That would be you by the looks of it. I'll stop here. lol great timing on the shot too! KP

Very nice capture indeed. The weather has been so inclement here capturing pics outside is nearly impossible. Where I work it frequented by geese often due to a pond that is close. I miss lot's of great shots because you know they don't want to pay me to take pictures of geese for SOME reason! LOL! Excellent capture!
