After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight
after a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers
and you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn...

Sounds to me like two people grown apart, one wanting to move on, grow. The other chasing it's own tail, not going forward or backward, just stagnanting and wanting to keep the other person there with them.

Very good abstract! The reader mentally reaches for the palette and brushes and begins painting. This is what I throw on the canvass: 'the woods'-past relationships. 'fork on the road' - Hope. Again, just enough information and very abstract. Keep on! D

Most excellent written piece. V What's that age old question, "How far can you go into a woods?". Answer: Halfway, then you start coming out of it. Even if you don't realize it. WINK. To me, this piece represented myself, battling my own inner demons. Some days I win, some days I lose. In either case, however, I'm still playing the game of life, albeit on reduced terms. Hang tough. My best. T.P.

TP, you must be a yankee! :) I heard that when I lived in Maine... Leah, it explains itself: I love the image of "walking in circles," and his rationalization...so like men! :) Your loving heart reached out to a soul in need, but that soul did not reach out to your needs. Wrong guy, hon. :)
