Description

For fifty years from the 1920s, the British bus scene was dominated by Half Cab vehicles from manufacturers such as Leyland, AEC, Daimler, Guy, Bristol, Albion and Crossley. Whether you got on at the front or the back, Half Cabs clocked up millions of miles taking passengers everywhere in the UK. However as the world moved on, the familiar Half Cabs with their engines at the front, were replaced with rear-engined models which could be operated by just the driver, fortunately many of these Half Cabs were preserved by enthusiasts who kept alive the various models and saved them for the future. This vehicle is a Leyland PD2 belonging to the Sheffield Transport Corporation, not the most comfortable to drive with the hot noisy engine behind a thin steel plate, only inches away from the driver. The steering was heavy and had to be forced around a corner when the bus was full and the clutch and brake pedal had to be almost stood upon to make them operate. In winter the heaters hardly ever worked and condensation would freeze on the insides of the roof panels. The cab was draughty and cold and just when you needed the heat from the engine it never seemed to get hot enough. The head lights were poor and the windscreen wipers left a lot to be desired. In summer the water would boil in the radiator, spill out and the rusty hot water would melt the tarmac road surface. Even with the windows open it was nearly hot enough to bake bread inside. How do I know all of this? Well I used to drive these buses years ago and this one outside the pub at Riverlin Terminus in Sheffield; I had just driven there myself.

I was on a bus tour to munich last friday and I can tell you how uncomfortable it was sitting in there for about 5 hours. I'm just wondering how it felt for people driving with this bus earlier / probably elder generation wasn't that spoilt :-)
