Description

In 1907 Edward and Harry Atkinson joined forces with George Hunt to set up a company called Atkinson & Co in Frenchwood Avenue, Preston. Akinsons began life as so many others, agricultural engineers. They progressed to making steam wagons. Later the company was reconstituted and devoted itself to diesel engined trucks in the premium heavy category. Along with Foden and ERF, they were considered to be the best of British built vehicles. When fortunes sagged in the post-war era, they amalgamated with Seddon from near-by Oldham. Seddon were the upper hand, but when the corporate identity looked like being lost, the famous "Circle A" was brought to the fore once again by drivers who "insisted" on having the motif on their vehicles. Seddon-Atkinson themselves were taken over by International Harvester who produced a diabolical range of trucks unfit for British roads and soon pulled out. They sold Seddon-Atkinson to Pegaso of Spain who in turn were bought by Iveco of Italy. The Italians knowing nothing of British institutions have transferred production of Seddon-Atkinson to the Spanish factory and so ends the tradition that was behind Atkinson. LOL... how cool, so cleverly built... a round front with what looks like the steam engine up into the cab. Also, notice those wheels, we forget they had solid rubber tires in those days. Especially like this one.
