Description
This is our second post of what we anticipate will be an extended series of images revealing the remarkable textures, patterns, fabrics, and asymmetrical symmetries that the various cells, tissues, and organs of the body form when viewed through a light microscope. Indeed, our hope is that we can convey in some small way what a remarkable work of art the human body really is. Collectively we refer to these images as HistoArt. We appreciate the kind comments that we received on our first post (of the colon).
This image is from the dermis (deeper layer) of the skin. It is composed primarily of interweaving bundles of collagen and elastic fibers to produce a tough but resilient tissue. The random weaving of the bundles of fibers gives the tissue a fabric-like appearance. The original photomicrograph was taken on a Zeiss Photomicroscope and recorded on Kodachrome 25 Color Slide Film. The Kodachrome slide was subsequently scanned at 1200 dpi and post-worked in Photoshop. The post-work on this image was done by my colleague Miranda. She loves flowers and thought the colors in this image reminded her of an iris in bloom. Hence the name Iris.
Some biographical information about us is posted at http://www.histoart.com/496180.htm.
Thanks very much for any comments, criticisms, etc. that you might have.

More fascinating imagery. I feel some people look at the thumb and think you just ran a stock filter over a photo...which is a shame. Very interesting work you do here, but maybe it would be interesting to see some of these in their un-postworked states. Just a thought.

Thanks very much for your comments TwoPynts. When tissues are sectioned for viewing through a microscope they are typically colorless. We apply histological stains to the sections for student study. These stains are good for student observations but not terribly exciting from an artistic perspective. With post-work in photoshop we can enhance and change the tinctorial properties that help emphasize the patterns, textures, etcs. that are inherent in the colorless tissues. A lot more goes into the post-work of these images than a simple stock filter application. I will try to upload in the next couple of days an unpost-worked vs. a post-worked image.

Again, great stuff!! .... and fascinating. It's like a whole new macro world that I've seen, or even thought of before. I'm curious what the magnification is on these photos. It would be interesting to know. Great work! Thanks for posting it. ~Tim

I always take a look at the galleries of people who made a comment on one of my contributions. This is by far the most unexpected stuff I've seen so far. This looks great and it really is fascinating. Miranda did an excellent job on the colors!!
