Description
This is our third image in our tissues and organs of the human body series. This image, like the previous post, is from the dermis of the skin. The dermis is the deeper layer of the skin, in contrast with the epidermis, which is the outermost (superficial) layer of the skin.
The blue. undulating structures that are so striking in this image are bundles of collagen fibers. As can be seen the collagen fiber bundles interweave with one another to form a dense, 3-dimensional mat or fabric of tough, resilient connective tissue. The 3-4 smaller, somewhat oval, and greenish blue structures are nuclei of cells (fibroblasts) that make the collagen fibers.
The original photomicrograph was taken on a Zeiss Photomicroscope and recorded on Kodachrome 25 Color Slide Film. The Kodachrome slide was subsequently scanned at 1200 dpi and post-worked (by me) in Photoshop. The final image reminded us of a typical winter scene here in Duluth, Minnesota and hence the name Winter.

Touching, magical, beautiful and the skin protects us against the cold in winter. Well done.

Fascinating images you have in your gallery so far! I think it is important for people to pop the bubble they are in...too many people live in their own little world of shopping and television. Many do not even ponder the micro or the macro...they just deny that there is more to the universe. With any luck someone will look at an image like this and really contemplate it's significance instead of ignoring it and going "gross." - Matt

luv the sweeping motion in this, Steve...looked at this one several times...i still see a woman frozen in time. Reminds me a bit of that movie AI (Artifical Intelligence)...toward the end where he finds the Blue Fairy...which is actually nothing more than a statue. i can't explain it well...but to him, he saw her as sooooo beautiful and elusive...that's what i see here. I see animals in hibernation. the texture is incredible. the image is magnificently beautiful!
