Description

There was a need for British Railways to build a modern tank locomotive to replace some of the ancient designs still in traffic in the early 50's. The result was the introduction of these capable 2-6-4 tank locomotives numbered in the 80000 series. A total of 155 were built and large numbers of them were scrapped at Woodhams Scrap Yard at Barry, South Glamorgan as a consequence of the spread of suburban electrification. 80080 seen here at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley, was built in Mar 1954, withdrawn July 1965, sent to Barry scrap yard Jan 1966 and after 14years and 10months left the scrap yard for preservation. The Midland Railway, Butterley is a complex of railway museum exhibits within the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley, near Ripley in Derbyshire. It lies on the Pye Bridge to Ambergate line of the old Midland Railway. The centre is also home to the Golden Valley Light Railway: a narrow-gauge line built on the trackbed of a former ironworks railway. The line runs for 3.5 miles. Enjoy steam lovers :)

beautiful shot and beautiful (if polluting) piece of machinery. I am just surprised that steam locomotives were still being built in the 1950s

This image recalls one of my oldest loves: trains. Those were the days when these engines did not need 'the' fossil source of energy (petroleum) to do their 24 hours per day work. 'Just for the record' : BRAVO!!!

Not a 'steam lover' but can certainly appreciate a good shot. The POV is perfect as is the tonality.

So many things I love... trees, castles, battleships and TRAINS, especially old steam locomotives. A classic shot. Those were the days.

Ive always been fascinated by how railway equipment, especially locomotives, from Europe look so different from their north American counterparts, even though theyre performing the same exact function. Its like seeing some sort of strange foreign breed of an animal that you see around your home. Wonderful image.

I love these old machineries :)) They look so out of time and it is difficult to believe they have been used in a relatively close past :)) Your shot id very good with a perfect angle of view :)) Excellent work!!
