Description

The Bridge House at Ambleside is possibly the most photographed building in the Lake District, and a popular subject for many artists including Turner. A tiny building, originally an apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall, was built over Stock Beck to escape land tax. It is said that at some time a family with six children lived here in the two rooms. Access to the room upstairs is by the steep stone steps outside. In 1926 it was purchased by a group of local people who passed it into the care of the National Trust, which 20 years later they turned into their first information and recruitment centre. It is now a rather cramped shop for the National Trust, or at least it was when this was taken back in 1969. If anything this image shows us the strength of the arch, considering how much weight must this be carrying. I was asked if the lightship had a crew, in "Dusty Old Slides #09" and the answer is yes. I hope everyone is sharing this beautiful weather I can see through my window, just before I go and cut the grass :(( A nice day to you all!

OOOOH this one is simply GORGEOUS!!!! And finally i can see some dust on it, and that only adds to this fine compo. Not far from my house lives a family of 8 in a house not bigger than that one...pretty crowded i can assure you. Great post once again Dave. Have fun mowing your lawn #:op

This is an absolute show stopper, your most fascinating yet. If I saw it in painting I'd think it was fabricated or the artist had been to the pub. No one likes paying taxes, but this is about as good as throwing a bunch of tea in Boston harbor.

Very interesting architecture ! They knew why they built it upon an arch...(at highschool I was told 'arches are perfect for carrying forces to the ground', I think they told me the truth ;-) e

Haha! Yeah, about time you cut that grass!! I think it's fair to say Ambleside now sucks, too many ice cream parlours & 'mountaineer' (yeah right) shops, I would love to have seen it when this was taken, sadly I was 1 yr old though.... An awful lot has gone under that bridge since then!! Am I right in thinking the Wordsworth museum is just opposite? Could be wrong, I go to the Lakes every year but it's a good 8 since I passed through Ambleside...

I can see why it is so often photographed...it is such a neat structure to be built on the bridge like that. Well captured!
