Description

Introduced between 1958 and 1962, 200 of this English Electric design were built and were the pride of the British Rail early diesel fleet. Despite their initial success though, by the time the last examples were entering service they had already been replaced on prestigious duties by more powerful locomotives. Locomotives were originally numbered in the range D200-D399, and were built in the standard BR Green livery. Several locomotives in the range D210-D235 (later 40010-035) were named after cruise ships operated by the company Cunard. Examples included Aquitania, Aureol, Lancastria, and Lusitania. Call them 'tin boxes' if you wish, but this class provided sterling service for over twenty years. They were mainly to be found in the north of England as well as Scotland. Locomotives started to be taken out of use in the early 1980s, as they were considered under-powered. The last locomotives were taken out of regular service by 1985. D212 'Aureol', seen above, was on a mission to raise funds for the preservation of more of this class. Best wishes and many thanks to you all, Dave.

Excellent image and history to go with it. Whenever you took this one, you did so with the same care and eye for detail that you have today. A wonderful "portrait" of a D200-D399 class diesel. Thanks for sharing, I hope they get that funding!

Classy looking locomotive... kinda has a unique style about it. I assume that "class 40 appeal" relates to the fund reaising appeal? Great shot. Next time refresh our memory... you took these slides? They are quite impressive.

Cool pic. I've enjoyed all of them. My little one's into Thomas the tank engine and these remind me a lot of those characters. And I like stuff like this anyway. Thanx for posting them.
