Description

Pilar Lopez often finds herself in her greenhouse, remembering her husband, Jorge. They had been married two years, three months, seven days, and fifteen hours--she had once calculated--when a suicide bomber exploded his device in the Green Zone of Bhagdad, killing Jorge and two other American Army Reservists and wounding three others. Jorge had served in Iraq almost six months. Pilar knew the news was going to be bad, when the Army chaplain, a captain, showed up at her door and informed her that her life, as she had known it, had ceased. She and Jorge had no children--would have no children, now--so she comforts herself by coming to the greenhouse, which Jorge built for her as a love gift a few months after they moved into their house. That was in the green years, the happy years of their second year of marriage. In the greenhouse, Pilar senses Jorge's presence more strongly than anywhere else. At his funeral, there was no closure. The flag-draped casket remained closed. There would be no last look at her beloved. So Pilar comes back to the greenhouse, again and again, seeking the closure that continues to elude her. It is a painful solace that she finds in the greenhouse; one that is still more endurable than the world beyond it without Jorge. *************************** This picture is dedicated to all those who have lost loved ones in that most stupid and hellish human endeavor that we call war. ************************** CREDITS: Fern plant and texture: by kemal. The combination of narrative and image are perfect. I felt what you were expressing in both the image and the narrative.
