Description

I have a little faceless man living inside my head that tells me to do things. He has nice sneakers wears a t-shirt. Sometimes I agree with what he wants me to do, but other days I just tell him to, "Shut up and take a nap!" Usually he listens, because he doesn't want to get me too angry. He's living inside my head after all.... After Brian's (tedz) post about Surreal photography in the forum the other day, I decided to post this semi-self portrait. The "photoshopping" was all done the old fashioned way...in the darkroom! :] This images is a combination of two photos that seemed to fit together. There was a time after first being exposed to Jerry Uelsmann's work that I spend hours trying different combinations of negatives to see what I could come up with. This is one of the more successful attempts. The background photo to the left is actually upside down like yesterday's lake photo. Sometimes a change of perspective is good, and I found the reflection more interesting than non-reflected part anyway. You can also read into the symbolism of the reflection however you like. ;] The close up of me on the left had some nice dark area's to the left of it which let me play with it more easily in the darkroom. The final print was sepia toned by hand. Years later it was scanned in and the levels adjusted and here you have the final product. ---- "don't twitch don't shout don't think don't even breathe" she said "or the photograph will spoil and cut you off at the head" so i was sweating i was sweating like a fat lady would... and i woke up with a man inside my mouth -Selected lyrics from the Cure song A Man Inside My Mouth.

Nice work in the darkroom. That little man in your head is the one you don't want to piss off. He might want to tickle few places in your brain while your talking to your boss or a cop that pulled you over. You know the rest. KP

Awesome self-portrait, Kort! You have a way of doing your portraits in such a dramatic way, and that what i love about them! When i look at this, i think of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. I'm not sure why...maybe because they were best friends...like you and your faceless man. well, they didn't always agree and get along, but who does? i can understand about faceless men living inside you head...'cept the men i have live inside my feet! LOL! I've always been a tomboy...always felt like my alter egos were boys tryin' to get me in trouble!!! I was supposed to be doin' girly things, but those boys inside my feet--on boy in each foot--were always carrying me away!!! Instead of behavin' and being prim and proper, i'd be climbin' trees and, gettin' all dirty, and NEVER lookin' like a girl! Anyway, i've even written a poem about it! LOL! yeah, yeah...i'm a bit crazy! sorry for rambling, Kort, but i just love your image...carries me away to my childhood. Wish my boys weren't such troublemakers!!! LOL! Sounds like you've got yours under control!!! You did a helluva job with this. adding to favs!

As the image unfolded on my screen, I was thinking there for a moment that I was looking at myself! But how can that be? Then i had to read what you worote and take another deep look at the portrait, followed by an observation of some of the comments. Another return to the photograph and a moment to contemplate, but where do i start? Is it the fine ballance of the image or the intensity of his (your) eyes? What grabs me, what holds me, keeping me from leaving and sucking me into the images as quick-sand. I guess it it s the look, piercing through me as if I were of glass. Excellent Kort! And just for he younger generation, I too was influenced by Jerry and did thinks the old fashion way, pre photoshop. Have a great weekend my friend.
