Description

Thanks for viewing !! :o) -- Black-tailed Skimmer, Orthetrum cancellatum (male) Its preferred environment are lowland pools and lakes with shallow margins and areas of bare shore. Often in artificial sites including gravel pits. Most common in early successional stage, decreasing as plant cover increases. They are on the wing from the end of April to the end of August. They can be seen on bare sand, gravel or low vegetation. At breeding sites males hold territory, they perch on the ground or low vegetation near or on water's edge, aggressively attacking other males. Also patrol over open water. Approaching females are seized and brief copulation ensues. Feed from perches taking large prey items including grasshoppers, damselflies and butterflies. The females oviposits alone but with male in attendance. Eggs are laid in flight by dipping abdomen onto water surface. The larvae live in bottom of pond partly buried in silt. Development takes 2-3 years. And... they are scared shitless (pardon me...lol) of brave little butties ;o) Hope you like & have a great wednesday :o) - Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my last upload, "Brave Little Buttie" !! -- Many thanks, Jeroen

My dear friend: in the last years of the XIX century lived a wonderful man, one of the fathers of the enthomology, Henry Favre, who wrote a wonderful 'Souvenirs Enthomolgiques'. In them he talks about insects and reflects about one thousand more things. His books are a delight. He has a chapter about the mood the feamale praying mantis devours its partner after copulation. Your photo of today's has remind me him. Excellent, as always.
