Poser 6 Sr1 my first impressions...
I am sorry for the long explanation, so if you want to skip it . . . please do so. Before I get started with my explanation, let me get the bad part out of the way. With the AO lighting, P6 takes forever to render. I added way too many polygons in this image. No background image was used. P6 crashed a lot. I had to render this image in two sections and put it together in Photoshop. I think the real problem with the render times is that my computer is 3 years old and just stinks. Now on to the good stuff. . . The AO lighting renders soft natural looking shadows. For example, now when Victoria opens her mouth she has natural shadows inside. No longer do you see the back of her throat as clearly as her forehead. I think it will now be safe for Victoria to open her mouth. I was going for natural looking shadows rather than exact realism. The AO lighting accomplishes that to my satisfaction. Then I promptly covered them all up with too much postwork.
The second thing I liked a lot was how easy it is to find the focus spot for depth of field. I am a photographer by trade, and I love using depth of field in my images. All the depth of field in this image is a result of P6 at F2.8. I did not use Photoshop to blur any of the image. This image may not be the best example, of what P6 can do, because too many things are in focus. I plan to keep using depth of field in more of my images. Hopefully I have learned not to clutter up the images with too many figures
A third thing I liked a lot was the partial image render. When working on the expression, I would make a change to one part of the face and then render that section only. As each section was rendered it was added to the render window. I didn't even have to render the entire face to know that the expression was the way I wanted it. This really saved a lot of time. P 6, there's a lot to love! Now I just need to get a new computer. Any suggestions?

A special thanks go out to Chelle aka Crasher for the awesome tutorial on hair painting and to Prog for recommending it on one of his beautiful images. Thanks Prog for sending me the link. I used it here and loved it. If anyone else is interested, here is the link http://www.renderosity.com/tut.ez?Form.ViewPages=98&PageAction=View&Page=16

The character is Faces of the Orient by Goldtassel... (The background was too dark to use black hair) The skin texture is Diana by Illusions Designs. I love this texture! Some of the vines, crystals and carpet bag are from RDNA. Other vine and the Cherry tree are from Linda

Dear Lon, I can't help much with P6 - mine is still in the box - no time to wrestle with it right now. The only thing I do know is that Poser generally has a tough time handling the heap. Run on as clean of system as you can when doing a render. That's very interesting about the depth of field. I didn't know about that in Poser. I could have guessed the photographic background - you show it in your framing and composition. And it also shows in the "FUJI" full saturated look! I bounce between "Kodak" and "Fuji" myself. Compare 168 and 171 to see what I mean. And what film would you recommend for 169? ;-) I shot some Kodak TP-2415 hypered astro film on just some scenic shots (OK, OK, it was a mess up!!) but it was pretty interesting. The resolution was incredible. I've been thinking about trying it with some hypered Kodak PJ 400 color negative film just for fun. And thinking about getting my own hypering rig. Great pose and expression!! Her eyes are haunting and your hair painting is fantastic!! Terrific set and I can understand why that would be a lot of polygons!!! Super excellent work!! Love, Meredith

I love the colors and that soft look to the render! I'm sorry P6 is giving you problems. Just got myself a new computer, but I think I'm still gonna hold off on P6. :) Gonna give myself some time to enjoy what the puter does with P5..LOL! Your image turned out lovely... In spite of what you went through!
madmaxh
In spite of your computer troubles, this came out excellent! The DoF is subtle and really adds to the overall effect. Agree that the spot render command saves much gnashing of teeth! :D

Jaw dropping scene. O_O

Well worth all the effort. Love that pose and expression. The colours are superb, and nice touch with the Depth of Field. If it's any comfort, P6 often does the same here - the price we suffer I s'pose for upgrading :) Excellent work!!!!!!

Her hair is stunning!! Beautiful scene, I don't have P6, but it looks like it renders very well. I know what you mean about having to do seperate renders and put them together afterward, my computer is only a year old and a good one but it still has difficulty rendering somtimes if there are alot of props in the scene. I really love all the colors in this, it is very beautiful!! :)
