thanks to all! :-) The shininess comes from five plain surface layers: steeper layers are darker, more even layers tend to white. @lazydog: no pw here!

very interesting..from this altitude one can actually see the basis functions of the fractals used to build the terrain....Excellent render BTW... It's all fractals folks...The only way to build synthetic landscapes
