Description
I took this photo in April on our trip to Colorado Springs, but wanted to save it until Independence Day! Behind the clouds in the background is Pike's Peak. This shot is taken from the visitor's center at Garden of the Gods.
The lyrics to the song "America the Beautiful" were written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) after an inspiring trip to the top of Pikes Peak in 1893. The first verse captures the essence of this area:
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
